Important Application Information

Thornton-Donovan School enrolls qualified students who possess strong academic ability, and are motivated, and who can and do achieve. Thornton-Donovan accepts qualified students regardless of origin, background or English language proficiency. T-D is approved by the U.S. Office of Immigration and issues I-20 forms to international student members. The admissions process begins with a personal meeting of the family with the Director of Admissions. After a special introduction to the school, its faculty and program, candidates are given an appointment to spend a day on campus with pupils in their own grade. Decisions on Admission are based on the strength of the interview, the student’s previous school record that should reflect above average grades, how the student interacts on the day of the visit, and various letters of reference.

Inquiries may be made any time during the year. Interviews with the Director of Admissions can generally be arranged at the convenience of the family. Once the application is filed, it takes the school about three weeks to render a decision. The School operated on a rolling admissions basis and space is far from guaranteed. While applications can be made as late as August, others file many months in advance before the school year begins. Not all grades are easily entered. The School holds an annual Open House in December for interested families and children. While the final decision is solely in the hands of the Headmaster, he considers information from the faculty, the student’s former teachers, and the student’s family. Testing is usually waived if the applicant’s record shows good potential and good achievement. Test scores are not used to eliminate students from consideration.

International Application Criteria and Process

Each applicant must have a history of academic and behavioral success. The student must demonstrate adequate English ability, as determined by proficiency testing (TOEFL or the equivalent). Customarily two letters of reference are required, a transcript of prior academic work or a copy of the last report card given, a completed application with the $100.00 application fee paid in U.S. dollars or by MasterCard or Visa. A copy of the applicant’s passport page showing date of birth and a 2”x 2” photo are required along with a copy of a bank statement matching or surpassing the school’s annual charges. Once accepted all applicants are notified in writing and have a two-week window to respond. An acceptance deposit of $10,000.00 is required as well as current completed student health forms and immunizations. Once the fee is received an I-20 application will be provided, if necessary.

Certain applicants, depending on country of origin, may be required to secure a student visa. Students are encouraged to apply for their visa early to best provide ample time for visa processing. Most visa applicants will be interviewed at an embassy or by a consulate. The waiting time for the interview usually varies, so early visa application is encouraged. Visa wait times for interview appointments and visa processing time information for each U.S. Embassy or Consulate worldwide is available at the Visa Wait Times website. Once the Student Visa is confirmed, a tuition statement will be forwarded. Any remaining tuition or homestay balance must be settled by August 15th before the upcoming academic year begins in September. All international students whose parents live outside of the United States must have a designated sponsor. International students reside in TD family or faculty residences.
